putting the patient at the centre of cancer care

The thoughtfully designed new building for the Yorkshire Cancer Centre presents the opportunity to encompass what is both essential and desirable for patient care. Ongoing patient involvement has been a vital element in its creation. Whilst the building is architecturally outstanding in its very design and visually arresting from many vantage points in the city of Leeds, much attention has been paid to the all important feel of the environment for the patients.

Patients Quotes:

"We want views of the outside, trees, flowers, fields etc. Choice of colours, original artwork on walls. Overall design based on comfort, to encourage feelings of ease rather than tension and fear, not merely a functional building."

"There is a great difference between recovery and a sense of well being. We are looking at the latter here; how to make the journey through hospital as comfortable and dignified for patients and carers as possible."

Patients' comments from Tonic Patient Consultation

Patient consultation has led to an inspirational programme to enrich the new building's environments and culture. The theme of "garden" has been chosen as a theme to unify arts and garden projects. These include sculpture, gallery space, enhancements to lighting and flooring as well as courtyard areas and terraces.

enhancing the patient experience

The centre will be a place to heal. Gardens and the arts have a positive role to play in creating a healing environment. A diagnosis of cancer brings challenges not only for the person involved but also for their family and friends. It is vital that the ambience of the hospital is welcoming and uplifting for both outpatient visits and inpatient admissions. Patients and staff need respite from clinical areas and opportunities to refresh their spirits and senses through visual and sensory stimulus.
