Yorkshire Cancer Centre Services
A Centre of excellence to save more lives
The eleven storey landmark building which cost £220 million was funded through the Private Finance Initiative (PFI*). It is one of the largest schemes for this part of Leeds for over a generation. The new Yorkshire Cancer Centre facility covers 67,000 m2; 1,500 staff are based in the building; the multi storey car park contains 1,300 spaces. The Centre is not only the largest cancer centre in the UK - it is the largest in Europe.
The new Yorkshire Cancer Centre facility provides a focus for treatment, teaching, research and development. Some key researchers and practitioners in the field of cancer for the whole of the UK provide high quality cancer care by developing and exploiting leading edge science, research and technology.
A Cancer Research UK cancer medicine research centre and the NHS National Cancer Research Network play key roles in the centre.
Quote: Professor Peter Selby, clinical director for the Leeds Cancer Centre:
“The new wing is a wonderful develo pment for patients within the Yorkshire Cancer Network which will mean their care will be provided in excellent, state-of-the-art surroundings that are as good as anywhere in Western Europe.”
* PFI - (Private Finance Initiative) private investment funds the design, building, financing and operation of the buildings under a 30 year concession after which the assets revert to the NHS Trust as a gift.
